Debed Canyon is one of the most scenic places in Armenia. Going down the canyon by marshrutka or a car is the best way to enjoy its beauty. Some old and interesting monasteries were built in the canyon.

  • Sanahin Monastery – religious complex founded in the 10th century. Surp Astvatsatsi is the main building of the complex. Sanahin complex was not only religious but science center as well. The monastery is listed among the UNESCO World Heritage List
  • Haghpat Monastery – it is religious complex listed on UNESCO World Heritage List. It was founded in the 10th century. The main church is decorated with frescoes. The complex is located in beautiful scenery of Debed Canyon.
  • Akhtala Monastery – it is my favorite monastery in Debed Canyon. The monastery is decorated with breathtaking frescoes.
  • Kobayr Monastery – was founded in XII century and is decorated with renovated frescoes.
  • St Astvatsatsin Church is located in Odzun. It was built in the 5th century.

Debed Canyon and monasteries can be visited in three ways:

  1. rent a taxi in Alavardi. It cost 13k DRAM. It takes half a day and all the monasteries are included.
