During our trip to Guatemala, we spontaneously decided to take a 1-day trip to Honduras. We planned to visit archaeological ruins of the Mayan city of Copan next to Guatemala border. We left Antigua at 3:30 a.m. The transport cost of round trip Q700 (1 USD = 7.8 Quetzal). It took about 8 hours with a break for breakfast from Antigua (Guatemala) to Copan(Honduras). The road got mercilessly long and the seats were not the most comfortable in the shuttle bus.
We spent 1 day in Honduras. We visited the ruins of the Mayan city of Copan ($20 entrance fee). The monument is not as great as Tikal in Guatemala, but it is certainly worth seeing the steles and reliefs made with great artistic craftsmanship. The visit of the archaeological site took about 4 hours. If you plan to visit the museum, it is practically a full day. In addition to the ruins, you can walk around the nearby friendly town of Copan Ruins. The hot springs, about 1 hour from town, are also a great way to relax for 3 hours in the afternoon. Transportation from Copan Ruins leaves at 2:00 p.m. and returns to town at 7:00 p.m. Transportation plus entrance fee to the hot springs is approximately US$30. If you have a full day, it is possible to combine visiting the ruins and the hot springs.
We spent 1 night at the Cuna Maya Hotel. Price of double room with bathroom and breakfast was 30 usd. Unfortunately there was no hot water.
