EL GOUNA – EGYPT’S VENICE
During my eight-day Egyptian adventure, I dedicated just one day to typical beach relaxation. The rest was filled with fascinating excursions, starting with a trip to extraordinary El Gouna – often called “Egypt’s Venice.” This exclusive resort town, located 22 kilometers north of Hurghada, is a true gem of the Red Sea.
An Architectural Marvel in the Desert
El Gouna dazzles with harmonious Arabian-style architecture where white buildings contrast beautifully with the blue of numerous canals. Interestingly, this is a relatively young town – founded in 1989 by Egyptian billionaire Samih Sawiris. Today it stands as a perfect example of blending traditional style with modern solutions.
My Experiences
With new friends from our tour group, we spent an unforgettable day in El Gouna. Paddling water bikes through picturesque lagoons was pure joy! Though luxurious, the town has an exceptionally pleasant vibe. Narrow alleys, colorful bazaars and cozy waterfront cafés create the perfect introduction to Egyptian culture.

Fascinating Facts About El Gouna
- The entire town is built across 12 interconnected islands
- Features its own airport and golf course
- One of few places in Egypt with drinkable tap water
- Powered by a wind energy farm
- Hosts an annual prestigious film festival
Why Visit El Gouna?
El Gouna offers the perfect gentle introduction to Egyptian culture. Unlike crowded Hurghada, it maintains a peaceful atmosphere. You can experience authentic local flavor without typical resort chaos. It’s also an excellent example of modern Egypt – blending tradition with innovation and environmental consciousness.
My visit to El Gouna proved absolutely worthwhile – this destination makes for an ideal first day in Egypt, allowing you to acclimate to the country’s vibe before diving into more intense adventures.
