Bukovina is famous of painted monasteries. In my opinion they are more attractive than Maramures’ churches. Most of them were built in 16th centuries. Despite extreme weather conditions, the external paintings are very well preserved. The only exception is north wall of the monasteries. The paintings are faded or almost completed destroyed. The subjects of the paintings are the same in every monastery. Religious scenes follow by the canon of Christian Orthodox faith. I was touched by Last Judgment paintings. Don’t forget to visit the monasteries inside.

The entrance fee is 10 lei.

Don’t waste your time and visit Putna Monastery. It is huge religious complex and in my opinion it is waste of time to see it.

Travelers fascinated by Christian Orthodox paintings or architecture may visit all of the Bukovina monasteries. Most of ordinary travelers will be completely satisfied with a few of them.

Traditional Bukovina villages are as interesting as monasteries. Hung around one or two villages. It is a great idea to spend a night in a traditional home-stay. Maybe the host invite you for traditional Romanian dinner.

It takes about half a day to go from Maramarus to Bukovina. The mountain road is very winding but the condition of the road is very good.
