Bran Castle

Romania is a prefect destination for the enthusiast of medieval castles. There are many castles in Romanian Transylvania.

The most famous and popular one is Bran Castle, Dracula’s castle. Count Dracula and the castle have become world-wide popular thanks to Bram Stoker’s novel ‘Dracula’. However according to historic records Count Dracula never lived in Bran castle.

The castle is very popular and you need to be prepared to spend hours or more queuing for the ticket (45 lei). The castle is a mix of a little bit of history, a bit of fantasy, and a lot of commercial. I recommend to visit torture room – extra paid 10 lei. The torture tools are very cruel and most of them were invented by German and Austrian – it does not seem to be coincidence :).

Rasnov Castle

The castle in Rasnov is much more impressive than Bran one. It is located on the hill and looks impressive from the distance. I presume it is splendid inside too. Unfortunately, in 2021, the castle was renovated and it was impossible to see it inside.

Poenari Castle

At the south end of the Transfagarasan route (see the post: Transfagarasan route) there is the real castle of Vlad Dracula. The Poenari castle is located on the steep mountain and it is not very impressive. There are 1488 steps to reach the castle and it is paid 10 lei. There are only walls and beautiful panoramic view from the walls.

Corvin castle ( called Hunyadi or Hunedoara)

It was built in the 15th century and it looks fantastic. We spent a lot of time walking around it and looking at it. The entrance fee was 35 lei and unfortunately there are only empty rooms inside the building. The only paid attractions is very nice wooden bridge. In my opinion, it is waste of money to go inside.
