After exploring Bangkok’s bustling streets and the ancient ruins of Ayutthaya, we headed north via overnight bus to Chiang Mai. The air-conditioned bus arrived at 6 AM, and despite the early hour, we secured a comfortable room (600 THB/~$18) near the Old City – significantly cheaper than Bangkok accommodations!

Our first day balanced culture and adventure. We visited sacred temples like Wat Chedi Luang before embarking on a jungle trek – a stark contrast to Ayutthaya’s flat temple complexes. Despite modest elevations, the 40°C (104°F) heat turned hikes into endurance tests. Pro tip: Carry 3L of water and electrolyte tablets!

The trek revealed Thailand’s incredible biodiversity: bamboo forests, banana groves, and termite mounds taller than children. We visited hill tribe villages where communities from Myanmar and ethnic groups like the Karen maintain traditional lifestyles – a world away from Bangkok’s urban energy.
