Koh Chang, one of Thailand’s larger islands, captivates visitors with its tranquility, beautiful beaches and tropical climate. After experiencing the vibrant energy of Patong and Phi Phi, I spent several relaxing days here – though not without some surprises. Here’s my complete guide to this charming island getaway.

Koh Chang Beaches – Where to Stay?
Beachfront accommodation is worth the premium for three key reasons:
- Immaculate maintenance – Hotels diligently clean both sand and water areas
- Instant ocean access – Even bungalows 20-30m back feel beach-adjacent
- Premium amenities – Complimentary loungers and umbrellas vs public beach towel-spots
Price comparison by proximity:
- Direct beachfront bungalows – Up to $250/night for luxury
- 30m from shore – Best value at $40-50/night
- 50-100m inland – Budget options from $20 but lose beach perks
Sunbathing and… Mosquito Battles
Days meant pure relaxation on powder-soft sand under swaying palms. The warm ocean felt like bathwater – a stark contrast to Phi Phi’s cooler currents. But beware: mosquitoes launched relentless attacks day and night. Pack industrial-strength repellent!
Another disappointment was the absent coral reef at Klong Prao Beach. Online claims of vibrant marine life proved false – perhaps other Koh Chang beaches offer better snorkeling? Share your experiences below!

Travel Inspiration – Solo Female Travelers in Asia
Throughout my Southeast Asia travels, I’ve been impressed by courageous solo female travelers – some exploring for months! Beyond appreciating their summer outfits (those swimsuits! 😉), I admire their adventurous spirit. Respect to all wanderers, whether on short trips or long-term adventures!
Beware Sand Fleas!
Final warning: sand fleas! Beach towels directly on sand invite painful, itchy bites. Always use loungers or thick blankets.

Verdict: Is Koh Chang Worth Visiting?
3-5 days makes an ideal relaxing getaway:
✔ Pristine beaches
✔ Affordable beachfront bungalows
✔ Perfect tropical ambiance
Cons?
❌ Aggressive mosquitoes and sand fleas
❌ Limited coral reefs (at least at Klong Prao)
