• One of Bangkok’s most surprising sights? Young Thai women (early 20s) with much older European men. While some resemble Sean Connery with his younger wife, most look more like… well, let’s just say the typical age gap is 30-40 years.
  • Thailand markets itself as “The Land of Smiles” – which isn’t entirely accurate. Thais don’t smile constantly, but they do master emotional restraint. Public anger or shouting is considered weakness. ADHD would probably land a Thai in psychiatric care.
  • Thai cuisine is magnificent. From aromatic soups to exquisite seafood dishes, it’s arguably the world’s best cuisine (at least among the 40+ countries I’ve visited).
  • For adventurous male travelers, Patong’s nightlife offers unforgettable experiences – go-go shows, street performers, and an electric atmosphere that must be seen to be believed.

Practical Thailand Tips

  • Flights: Lufthansa from Warsaw via Frankfurt to Bangkok for under 2500 PLN (~$600)
  • Exchange rate: ~33 THB to 1 USD
  • Visas: We paid nothing thanks to Thailand’s off-season tourism promotion
  • Accommodation: Prices vary wildly. AC is essential in hot months. Traveling in pairs is ideal – most hotels specialize in double rooms.
  • Massages cost $5-10. Recommend full-body Thai/Khmer massage or foot reflexology.
  • May weather: ~40°C (104°F) with occasional downpours. Manageable but November-March is ideal.
  • Grand Palace dress code: Cover knees and shoulders.
