Venezuela – South America’s Forgotten Gem
Our next great adventure brought us to Venezuela – a country three times larger than Poland, where lush nature, dramatic history, and passionate people create an unforgettable mix. This destination remains off mainstream tourist trails, yet hides countless treasures.
Terra Incognita for Polish Travelers
Venezuela remains one of the least documented destinations in Polish travel literature. While publications associated with major newspapers attempted to showcase the country through beautiful photo albums, they lacked practical trip-planning information. Online resources about Venezuela also pale in comparison to popular destinations like Thailand https://orbhike.net/category/azja/tajlandia/. Ultimately, I prepared using Lonely Planet’s English guidebook supplemented by online research.

Land of Contrasts and Surprises
Venezuela brims with paradoxes. It possesses the world’s largest oil reserves while struggling economically. Birthplace of Simón Bolívar, South America’s liberator, it’s also home to Angel Falls – the world’s highest waterfall (979m). Venezuelan women regularly win Miss Universe titles, while local cuisine charms with simple arepas (corn cakes) and pabellón criollo (the national dish of rice, beans and meat).
Spontaneous Adventure
Our decision to visit Venezuela was largely opportunity-driven – we found promotional roundtrip flights for just 1800 PLN (~$450). This proves how attractive prices can open completely new, unexpected travel destinations.

In early March, Monika and I will set out to explore this fascinating country. Our itinerary includes:
- Canaima National Park with its tabletop mountains (tepui)
- The Caribbean archipelago of Los Roques
- Colonial treasures of Coro (UNESCO World Heritage Site)
- Venezuelan Los Llanos – wildlife-rich savannahs
This will be a challenging but unforgettable journey. Venezuela, though demanding, rewards travelers with unparalleled landscapes and authentic encounters with its warm-hearted people.
